The Principal Fire Engineer’s Role

The successful Principal Fire Engineer will take on a pivotal role within the team, leading projects across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

They will provide expert fire safety advice, develop strategies, and ensure compliance with the latest regulations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Fire strategy development: Creating strategies for fire safety in new or existing buildings.
  • Compliance: Ensuring projects meet regulations such as BS 9999, BS 7974, or other relevant standards.
  • Design solutions: Using tools like CFD modelling to simulate fire and evacuation scenarios.
  • Client engagement: Providing expert advice on fire safety during planning and construction phases.
  • Project management: Overseeing the implementation of fire safety measures and mentoring junior engineers’ improvement initiatives.

The Principal Fire Engineer

To excel in this role, you should ideally possess:

  • A Master’s degree in fire engineering or a related subject.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a STEM or engineering field.
  • Chartered is highly desirable or currently working towards.
  • Previous fire engineering experience within a UK Consultancy / Architecture firm
  • Proven expertise in leadership roles is highly desirable.
  • Membership with the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) or a similar professional body.
